I've never heard of you guys...what is DBSA?
We are the largest peer (consumer, patient) run mental health organization in the nation focusing on the most prevalent of psychiatric disabilities; mood disorders.
Our motto is, “We've been there. We can help.” DBSA started in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois
We believe that peer support, connections with family members, health and wellness education, talk therapy and medical care, spiritual life and employment all play important roles in recovery.
The national website is one of the very best resources for people living with mood disorders, their family members and the general public. Visit www.dbsalliance.org and discover what we mean.
DBSA Colorado, Inc. is our state organization. We actively recruit peers and family members to help establish free, self-help support groups in parts of Colorado where none currently exist. We provide leadership training, encouragement, consultation at no charge to peers who want to start a group or chapter OR want assistance in improving their support groups, organizational structure and community outreach activities. The state organization does not direct or control the operations of local DBSA groups. We are all independent affiliates of DBSA national.
DBSA Colorado originally incorporated as BrainStorm in 2008. The vision for DBSA Colorado and BrainStorm started with four peers who shared a sense of frustration with the 'system' and compassion for Coloradans who don't qualify for available public services and supports. As peer-providers, we are breaking new ground in demonstrating ways both our peers and human services professionals can work together to effectively link wellness to work.
Unemployment and underemployment create limited or no access to health care services for people who struggle with the unspeakable sadness of depression, the dangerous impulsive actions of mania, the mental paralysis of anxiety, and the haunting memories and rage of PTSD that lead to social isolation, poverty, and suicide.
The state organization office is located in Colorado Springs. We receive phone calls and e-mails daily from peers and family members who are looking for in-person support groups run by people who have 'lived experience' with psychiatric disabilities. We listen to your concerns, offer information about community resources and try to connect you with existing support groups (including those not affiliated with DBSA). Information and/or peer coaching we provide is NOT A SUBSTITUTE for professional counseling or medical care.
DBSA Colorado Inc. is a nonprofit organization that has tax-exempt status from the IRS. Cash and in-kind donations to help our work are tax-deductible.
